7 Ways To Improve Immunity
Mar 09, 2023
During the current flu virus outbreak, it is more important than ever to adopt positive lifestyle habits that will help you stay healthy and strengthen your body's complex immune system against infection and disease.
There are no shortcuts to improving immune function; maintaining an overall healthy lifestyle is the best defense. According to research, our genes determine nearly half of our immune system function, but the other half is largely influenced by our daily habits. So there's a lot of room for improvement.

1. Quit smoking.
COVID-19 is a new respiratory disease that damages the alveolar membranes in the lungs. In severe cases, COVID-19 can affect breathing, and patients may even need respiratory support. Those with lung disease are more likely to become infected. If you smoke and need a reason to quit, let this epidemic be your reason. Since lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer deaths among men and women in the United States, avoiding smoking and e-cigarettes is always a good rule to follow. Even if quitting smoking doesn't prevent you from getting coronavirus, it can save your life in the future. So, please quit smoking. It's mitigating risk and the first thing you can do to improve immunity.
2. Get enough sleep.
Sleep is when the magic happens; when the entire body system is rejuvenated. Scientists are still exploring all the ways in which sleep can improve health, but the REM (rapid eye movement) sleep cycle is particularly important. For example, people with sleep apnea (a disorder in which people wake up before they enter a REM sleep cycle) have higher rates of memory problems, mood disorders, heart disease, and possibly cancer.
Everyone is encouraged to aim for six to eight hours of sleep per night and to maintain good sleep hygiene. Set a regular bedtime and wake-up time, and try to stick to it every day. Also, don't drink alcohol before bed because it interferes with sleep, and don't have a screen in your bedroom. The blue light will make the brain think it is daytime, making it more difficult to fall asleep.

3. Stress reduction.
Cortisol is a stress hormone that suppresses the immune system. Stress can also affect our sleep. When you feel anxious, you keep turning things over and over in your head, and your sleep is negatively affected by this. The same is true of eating habits. When we're stressed, we're more likely to make poor decisions, such as eating unhealthy foods, which can have a domino effect on our overall health. It's important to look for ways to help manage anxiety during an epidemic.
Now is a good time for self-improvement. In times like this, when so much is happening that is out of our control, it's very helpful to focus on the aspects of immunity and resilience that we can control to feel healthy and comfortable that we are doing everything we can to stay healthy.
4. Exercise regularly.
Aerobic exercise makes the immune system more effective, not to mention its effectiveness in reducing stress and relieving depression. We have found that people who work out aerobically are less likely to get sick than those who do not exercise regularly. Most states require people to stay home, so people have to get creative to find ways to be physically active. Exercise should still be an important thing. He says exercise can improve cardiovascular health, lower blood pressure, help control weight, and prevent a variety of diseases. Developing some kind of aerobic fitness habit is an important step in improving immunity.

5. A plant-based diet.
A well-rounded, balanced diet, such as the Mediterranean diet, which is full of vegetables, lean meats, and healthy fats, is another way people can improve their immune systems. There is similar data supporting a plant-based diet in preventing infections.
Much of the immune system is in the lining of the gut, so it's a good idea to support your gut and microflora with lots of probiotics. Many people look to probiotics to supplement the beneficial bacteria in their gut, and scientists stress the importance of a whole-food diet rather than taking probiotic supplements - unless you are taking probiotics for a specific purpose, such as irritable bowel disease. Consider adding probiotic-rich foods to your diet, such as yogurt or fermented foods (such as Korean kimchi, miso, and sauerkraut).
6. Remain skeptical of supplements.
Although some people claim that certain vitamins and supplements, such as vitamin D, zinc, and elderberries, can improve immunity, there is not enough evidence to suggest that they help. Let me also remind you that it's one thing to eat elderberries, but another to take capsules that claim to be elderberries. In fact, one study reported that of the 44 herbal supplements tested, 30 had product substitutes and only two of the 12 contained products without any substitutes. A large percentage of these used filler ingredients and other product substitutes that contained allergens. Again, if you eat mostly whole food and a plant-based diet, then you are getting the vitamins and nutrients your body needs. My advice is to eat fewer vitamins and supplements and more real food.
However, according to studies, the consumption of cistanche extract is effective in boosting the body's immune system.
cistanche is a type of fungus that has been used in traditional Chinese medicine for centuries. It is made from the dried stems and stalks of the fungus, which grows in tropical and subtropical regions of Asia. It is commonly used to improve immunity, relieve fatigue, and treat colds and other infections.

Research has shown that cistanche can increase the production of antibodies, which can help the body fight off foreign invaders such as viruses and bacteria. It has been found to increase the number and activity of T cells, a type of white blood cell that is responsible for helping the body to recognize and fight off harmful invaders.
In addition, studies have shown that cistanche can reduce the severity of colds, flu, and other viral infections. It has been found to decrease the amount of time it takes for the body to recover from viral or bacterial infections. cistanche can also reduce the duration of fever caused by certain viruses, as well as decrease the risk of developing secondary infections.
Furthermore, cistanche is known to have anti-inflammatory properties, which can reduce inflammation associated with certain diseases. Studies have also shown that dendrobium can help improve the effectiveness of certain antibiotics.

Overall, research suggests that cistanche can be a useful treatment for improving immunity and fighting off various infections. It can help improve the body’s natural defenses, reduce the severity and duration of illnesses, and may even reduce the risk of developing secondary infections.
7. Don't drink too much alcohol.
When you're at home, you may want to have a few more drinks than usual, but excessive drinking puts your immune system's health at risk. The current U.S. Dietary Guidelines for Americans recommend drinking alcohol in moderation - up to one drink per day for women and up to two drinks per day for men. Do not drink alcohol before bedtime, as it may interfere with sleep.
Combining healthy habits that encompass the whole body (exercise, healthy eating, getting enough sleep, stress reduction) can really help strengthen the immune system. Be good to yourself and you will make the most of what you have.
